Indexed Universal Life (IUL)

Indexed Universal Life (IUL)

Indexed universal life, or IUL, is a permanent life insurance option I use when someone wants long-term protection and the potential to grow money for the future, without putting that money directly at risk in the stock market. It blends a death benefit with a cash value account that can grow over time.

With IUL, your premium can be more flexible than traditional whole life. You have a required minimum to keep the policy healthy, and above that, you may have room to increase or decrease contributions as life changes. Some clients like to pay more in their higher-earning years to build cash value they can later use in retirement.

The cash value is linked to one or more market indices, such as the S&P 500, but your money is not actually invested in stocks. When the index performs well, your cash value can earn interest up to a certain cap. When markets drop, a built-in floor helps protect your principal from being dragged down with it. That "upside potential with downside protection" is what many people find reassuring.

Over time, that cash value can become a resource. You may be able to take withdrawals or policy loans to supplement retirement income, help with college costs, or handle an unexpected expense. Used carefully, it can add another layer of flexibility to your overall plan.

I often design IUL for clients who want permanent coverage that can adjust with them-increasing death benefit options, room to redirect premiums, and the chance to grow a meaningful cash value over the long term. During a personal review, I walk you through how the indexing works, what the guarantees are, and whether an IUL fits the way you like to balance risk and stability.
